Life Saving Appliance – Level 2

The Level II Assessment for Experienced Service Technicians spans over five days and incorporates an E-learning unit focusing on ISO 23678 Part 4 (Level II) Assessment Introduction. The assessment is structured into three units, addressing work, health, and safety issues during activities on board, as well as annual and 5-year inspections, maintenance, and tests for lifeboats, rescue boats, fast rescue boats, launching appliances, and release gear.

General Overview:

This competency document is tailored to assess the in-field and ongoing competence of Level 2 Service Technicians. Candidates must meet specific pre-requisites for the in-field assessment, either through evidence of experience or competence in relation to ISO 23678-2 and ISO 23678-3.

Candidates shall either:

Successfully complete Level 1 Service Technician controlled environment technical education and training; or Provide evidence demonstrating a satisfactory level of previous experience, supported by completion of Service Technician Level 1, CRALOG training certificate, or a manufacturer's established certification program, along with sufficient in-field work experience.

Supporting evidence may include training logs, reports, photographs, or videos covering a range of systems.

Unit 1 — Work, Health, and Safety Issues:

Element 1.1: Identify individuals requiring information and consultation throughout the scope of work.

Element 1.2: Understand and manage documentation creation, verification, and interpretation during interventions.

Element 1.3: Perform safety checks before commencing work.

Element 1.4: Examine and utilize equipment safely for the work scope.

Unit 2 — Annual Inspection, Maintenance, and Operational Test:

Elements 2.1 to 2.11: Covering various aspects such as davit and winch annual examination and maintenance, launching appliance operational tests, lifeboat and rescue boat examinations and maintenance, and release gear examinations and operational function tests.

Unit 3 — 5-Year Thorough Examination, Overhaul, and Operational Overload Test:

Elements 3.1 to 3.4: Addressing the overhaul of launching appliances, lifeboats, rescue boats, release gear, and the 5-year operational overload test for launching appliances and release gear.

Additional Training in the Series:
  • ISO/PAS 23678 Part 2: Initial training consisting of 3 modules.
  • ISO/PAS 23678 Part 2: Initial Re-freshmen program with one module.
  • ISO/PAS 23678 Part 3: Level 1 training in a controlled environment, encompassing 5 modules.

This comprehensive Level II Assessment ensures that experienced service technicians possess the knowledge and skills required for the thorough examination, maintenance, and operational testing of critical lifesaving appliances.
